Irish Boxer Who Took Names In Turkey Explains Heartbreaking Reason Why He Can't Go Home

He took on an entire neighbourhood in Istanbul, and he's still there.

An Irish-Kuwaiti boxer who bate the heads off a mob of incredibly angry Turks has spoken out about how he still believes his life is in danger - weeks after the initial brawl.

But Mohammed Fadel Dobbous revealed that he is staying in Istanbul, where a gang of shopkeepers attacked him in late August, because he is helping his elderly mother escape Syria.

Speaking to Joe Duffy on Liveline, Mohammed said:

[My life] still is [in danger] at the moment, I think, because [I'm a] witness or something. [My lawyer] called me this morning and told me about these arrests; the special police force came in and gathered up all of the mob, all of the people who were in the video, I think. I'm not sure.

But the Kuwait-born beast of a man says he himself cannot yet leave the city, as his mother is leaving Damascus to get over the border to Turkey, and wishes to help her before they both leave for Ireland.

She's over 90 now and she's in a wheelchair. So I needed somebody to help her cross over.

It's two kilometres and all stones and big rocks, so she can't walk over, she's in a wheelchair.

Mohammed had to undergo surgery after suffering a cracked skull, broken arm and broken shoulder blade during the mass street scrap last month.

He added:

At the moment I am biding my time now because I need the medical care. I need to go to the doctor and look after my arm. I have to get painkillers. At the same time, I've checked in with my mother and as you see on the news, the border is closed.

Incredibly, the entire brawl started when he opened a shop fridge to get a bottle of water (albeit somewhat aggressively), and the Irishman was then seen dropping the right hook from hell on the community of bollickses who decided to assault him.

Mohammed maintains he wasn't drunk during the fight, as he has "never drank," and maintains that he didn't kick anybody on the floor:

I didn't kick anybody on the floor. I was fighting nobly. I was fighting with courage.

He also revealed that one man tried to throw a portable cooker at him, adding,

If they had a kitchen sink, they  would've tried to throw that as well.
