The Oscar Nominations Are In And There's Massive Irish Interest This Year

The Oscar nominations are finally here and there is a strong Irish interest in many of the most prestigious categories.

It would have been a shock if Saoirse Ronan hadn't got her Best Actress in a Leading Role nomination, but we can now confirm that she will compete with the likes of Cate Blanchett and early favourite Brie Larson for the award. Brooklyn, in which Ronan stars, also got the nod in the Best Picture category.

There's further Irish interest in the form of Room which is written by Dublin-born Emma Donoghue who also wrote the book upon which the film is based. Director Lenny Abrahamson is also from Dublin. It has picked up nominations in four categories; Best Actress in a Leading Role (as mentioned above, for star Brie Larson), Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Michael Fassbender's portrayal of Steve Jobs earned him a Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination while his fellow cast member Kate Winslet also received a nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Domhnall Gleeson is another Irish person with invested interest this year as he also starred in Brooklyn but also in Star Wars: The Force Awakens which received five nominations in the technical categories. These include Visual Effects and Film Editing.

Here's hoping they can bring home a few awards at the end of next month!

The nominations in all the main categories are below:
