Video: Dublin Zoo Was A Fantastic Communion Destination 50 Years Ago

This is some remarkable footage of 1965 Dublin by Youtube user memorybliss.

It seems that 50 years ago, there was no need for bike padlocks or any crime at all for that matter (as one commenter points out, Tallaght didn't exist).

But oh, how the landscape would change, not least the statue of Admiral Nelson on O'Connell Street (from 1:07) which was destroyed by the IRA less than a year later.

The video paints a surreal, peaceful picture of a totally different Irish society, and in turn, different capital city. The mood is encapsulated perfectly by two children riding a baby elephant at Dublin Zoo - on what was presumably their communion day - at the end of the video.

Gas scenes.

Do check out memorybliss' Youtube channel for more amazing footage of Dublin from the past 120 odd years.
