David McWilliams Has Launched A Superb Attack On The Current Leaving Cert System

For Leaving Cert students, if you don't know who David McWilliams is, we hope you didn't study economics. But according to McWilliams himself, who the hell cares?

Within the context of your life, today's results are nowhere near as meaningful as they've been forced down your throat to be for the last three years and beyond.

McWilliams took to his official Facebook account to lambaste the current Leaving Cert format, with a cheeky stab at the people some might describe as 'swots.'

Back in 2013, the economist, broadcaster and journalist penned a hearty call for a change in the currently mundane system, which - even to lesser minds such as myself, who sat it in the last few years - seems to strangle creativity and inspiration external to academic studies, and essentially forces thousands of square pegs into circular holes for the majority of their young adulthood.

McWilliams wrote:

...today when the world is faced with disruptive technology and rapid economic change, the education system’s key metric of reward and punishment should reflect real-world challenges and not old-world academic prejudices which elevate a certain type of brain and denigrate another type.

In a world of infinite possibilities there is always more than one answer.

In fact, he has written substantially on the topic- and if today's results didn't go to plan, it's well worth giving some of this a read.
